Heinrich Alberts defeats world champion Chad Le Clos in 100m butterfly heats – Swimming news
Heinrich Alberts stunned the arena by defeating the world 200m butterfly gold medallist, Chad Le Clos, in the 100m butterfly heats on day five of the 2011 South Africa Age Groups Swimming Championships.
Clos, who has claimed six gold medals at these championships and also improved the record for the 50m butterfly in the event, was just out-touched by his companion, Alberts, in one of his main events. Clos is currently the 200m butterfly gold medallist for
the year 2010 at the World championships, Commonwealth Games and the Youth Olympic Games.
Alberts touched the wall in a fastest time of 55.39 seconds and was followed by Le Clos and Dylan Bosch for the second and third fastest qualifying spots in a time of 55.79 and 56.98 seconds, respectively. The event was a close fight as all the remaining
swimmers completed their swims in less than 58.00 seconds, to proceed into the finals.
The 16-year-old Reynard Wessels conquered the same event in his age group to qualify as the fastest swimmer in a superb time of 57.16 seconds. Jonathan VD Merwe and Zaahir Gamiet followed him for the second and third spots with a timing of 57.48 and 57.68
seconds, respectively.
In the Women’s corner, 17-year-old Terianne Brown qualified as the fastest butterfly swimmer for the finals in her age group, in a time of 1:05.84 minutes ahead of Mu’minah Connelly and Jessica Kelsey, who touched the wall in a time of 1:07.26 and 1:08.24
minutes, respectively.
In the 100m butterfly, 16-year-old Vanessa Mohr qualified as the fastest swimmer in her age group in a time of 1:01.82 minutes, an effort that was unreachable by her fellow swimmers. Kayla Ferreira and Barbara Lambrechts followed her as the second and third
fastest qualifiers in a time of 1:05.45 and 1:07.45 minutes, respectively.
In the younger age group, Marne Erasmus stood as the fastest butterfly swimmer clocking a time of 1:02.51 minutes. She was followed by Michaela Barnes and Sune Storme, who touched the wall in 1:06.10 and 1:06.78 minutes, respectively.
