Heinrich Haussler desperate in need of a win to make it through to the Olympics squad
Heinrich Haussler of Team Garmin-Barracuda is getting impatient with his victory-less season.
The cyclist is currently seen in action at the Amgen Tour of California and is desperate in need of victory at the event.
The Australian started the race well and came close to victory during the first and the second stages of the race but could not match the likes of inform Peter Sagan.
Sagan claimed the top podium spot during the first and the second stages of the race while Haussler achieved the second overall position during both the stages.
Registering an early win is very important for Haussler with the Olympic Games round the corner.
Representing Team Australia at the mega event has always been amongst his biggest goals and the cyclist has to impress the selectors in order to secure the Olympics place.
While commenting on the ongoing Tour of California he told Cyclingnews, "The team is here for the general classification”.
“So I will have to do my own thing in the sprints, but if you look at my past results I've shown that I can find my own way".
“I'm not happy with the way the season's been going. But I've gone back to basics to get back on track”.
“I've been at altitude training, and now I'll race here, go back to altitude, then do Tour de Suisse and then do more training. I've got to get some massive results to qualify for the Olympics”.
The 28-year-old’s dipping performance has raised suspicions in his mind and he has now started thinking of other options.
Haussler briefed that he can consider riding the Tour de France in case the Olympics opportunity is lost.
However, he is aware of the fact that it will not be easy to make it through to the final squad for the French Grand Tour either.
Heinrich currently holds the second overall position after the stage 2 classifications with a deficit of 8 seconds over the race leader Peter Sagan.
Leigh Howard of Team Orica-GreenEdge is holding the third position with Jeffry Louder of Team UnitedHealthcare and Fred Rodriguez of Team Exergy achieving the fourth and the fifth spots.
It will be interesting to see how Haussler approached the upcoming stages of the race as he is not willing to settle for anything less than the first place finish at the event.
