Heisman Trophy race: week 13
The Heisman Trophy race continues to heat up, as the college football season draws to an end. With only two weeks left in the 2010 season the pressure is beginning to mount around the nation’s Heisman hopefuls. Moreover, the allegations surrounding Auburn
Tigers quarterback Cam Newton seem to have opened up a Heisman race, which was once dominated by the junior.
Cam Newton – QB – Auburn Tigers
Auburn quarterback Cam Newton was once far away the favourite to take home the Heisman Trophy. However, after allegations surfaced that his father Cecil accepted money from the university in exchange for his son’s letter of commitment, the hype around the
youngster has tapered off. With a result from the ongoing investigation unlikely to come before the end of the season, voters are going to have to decide whether or not they are willing to risk Newton becoming ineligible. Newton’s stats would make him a shoe-in
for the Heisman, as the youngster has tallied 2,038 passing yards, 21 passing touchdowns and 17 rushing touchdowns. Nevertheless, the threat of NCAA violations may be enough to keep voters from committing to the Georgia native.
Kellen Moore – QB – Boise State Broncos
Boise State Broncos quarterback Kellen Moore moved past Oregon Ducks running back LaMichael James on several voters lists after the junior put together another inspired performance in week 12. Moore led his club to a convincing 51-0 victory over the Fresno
State Bulldogs, tallying 333 passing yards and four touchdown passes. Moore has become a legitimate Heisman candidate through his incredible pocket play. The youngster has tossed for 2,921 yards and 28 touchdowns, while earning a QB rating of 188.42. Simply
put, Moore has been tremendous in 2010 for the unbeaten Broncos. With only five interceptions and a completion percentage above 70% Moore is next in line behind Newton for the trophy.
LaMichael James – RB – Oregon Ducks
Oregon Ducks running back LaMichael James was the victim of a poor offensive game by the Ducks in week 11, as the club was only able to tally 15 points in a close in over the California Golden Bears. James is still the best running back in the country this
season and still has a real chance of winning the Heisman at the end of the year. The Ducks have two more games this season and if they are able to win them both they will be playing for a national championship. This type of team success will certainly help
James when it comes to Heisman voting. As an individual James has been outstanding this season and has amassed 1,422 yards and 17 touchdowns on 225 attempts, all without committing a fumble.
Justin Blackmon – WR – Oklahoma State Cowboys
Oklahoma State Cowboys wide receiver Justin Blackmon remains one of the most underrated players in the country. Blackmon has helped to lead the Cowboys to a 10-1 season, a Big 12 South Division lead and the nation’s second best passing offence. Blackmon
maintained his strong year in his club’s week 12 game against the Kansas Jayhawks, registering 10 receptions for 130 yards and one touchdown. Blackmon’s strong play against Kansas added to an impressive season, which has seen the sophomore haul in 94 receptions
for 1,560 yards and 17 touchdowns. Blackmon is the best wide receiver in the country and if his club is able to take home a Big 12 championship, could challenge for the Heisman.
Andrew Luck – QB – Stanford Cardinals
An early season favourite Stanford Cardinals quarterback Andrew Luck has forced his way back into the conversation with his tremendous play over the past three weeks. In week 12 Luck solidified himself as a Heisman candidate, passing for over 200 yards for
the third straight game. Luck, tossed for 235 yards and two touchdowns in his club’s 48-14 win over the Cal. Unfortunately, despite Luck’s strong play, his club’s one loss will likely be enough to keep him from having a legitimate chance at Heisman glory.
