Everton defender, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/John-Heitinga-c18862, has admitted that his side let down thousands of fans by putting up a poor show against Leeds United on Tuesday night.
The Merseyside outfit suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at the Elland Road in the third round of the Capital One Cup, forcing them out of the tournament.
Even though they went into the game in blistering form, the men in blue looked completely out of sorts during the preliminary stages of the game.
They conceded an early goal, and never really threatened making a comeback, as they struggled to build any kind of tempo during the match.
Almost 5000 Everton fans travelled from Merseyside to Elland Road to support their team, but were let down by their lacklustre performance.
The Dutch International unravelled his disappointment on the manner of their defeat on Tuesday.
He was of the opinion that the Toffees had set high standards for themselves, following their remarkable start to the season. Hence, their below par showing against Leeds naturally came as a big letdown for the fans, who were expecting something much better
from their team.
“We need to bounce back, especially for the fans. We came with 5,000 Evertonians, which was great. The support of them was really great. It was because of us that we lost, not them,” he told the reporters.
“You need to focus on the next couple of games and we need to bounce back now. Not only for ourselves, for the fans.”
The Goodison Park team are currently resting at the third place in the league table, only three points adrift of leaders, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786.
Having thrashed Swansea City 3-0 in their previous league game, Heitinga called upon his team to overcome their League Cup disappointment, and turn their focus towards the next match.
“We are out of the competition now and we need to focus on the league instead. There is not much time to think about this game because the next game is in a few days,” he added.
