Heitor Alves and Joel Parkinson survive Round 3 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
The ninth and tenth heat of Quiksilver Pro New York’s Round 3 went down at the Long Beach, New York, on Thursday, September 8.
Brazil’s Heitor Alves came up with an outstanding performance during the ninth heat to take down Australia’s Adrian Buchan, securing his place in the fourth round while removing his opponent from the contention for the event title.
The tenth heat saw Australia’s Joel Parkinson walk away with a convincing victory over his compatriot, Kai Otton, to move into Round 4, eliminating his rival from the competition in the process.
The surfing conditions turned out to be pretty demanding at Long Beach, offering six-foot waves and strong winds to the surfers which tested them for both skills and experience.
As the Round 3 bout between Alves and Buchan kicked off, the latter got off to a relatively better start, locking the very first wave that came his way to post 5.67 points on the scoreboard. The 29-year-old Alves went through a series of waves before responding
to his rival with a 7.00-point wave and snatching the lead.
The Brazilian followed up his first business-wave with another outstanding effort, pulling off a series of exquisite manoeuvres and adding another 9.43 to his account. This moved him to a heat-total of 16.43 points. Buchan struggled to find a decent response
and only managed to earn another 4.00 points, which took his two-wave total to 9.67 points. As a result, the fate of the contest was sealed in Alves favour, sending him into the next round.
The tenth heat pitted the 30-year-old Parkinson against his countryman, Otton, in a battle for survival. Both the surfers had plenty of experience, though Parkinson enjoyed a better reputation than his rival when it came to skills.
As the battle commenced, Parkinson got off to a blazing start, locking the first wave that travelled his way to add 7.00 points to his account. He patiently waited for another juicy wave to show rather than settling for a mediocre one. In the later stages
of the heat, his wait came to a end as another promising wave showed up. Pulling off a string of impressive tricks, he earned 7.80 points for the effort and took his heat-total to 14.80 points, which eventually carried him off to victory.
Otton failed to make a solid impact during the 30-minute battle and his poor wave selection led to his defeat eventually. He finished the contest with a heat-total of 9.14, which included a 4.07 and 5.07-point wave.
