Heitor Alves and Julian Wilson victorious in Round 1 of Quiksilver Pro Portugal 2011
The 20th and 21th heat of Quiksilver Pro Portugal’s round of 96 (Round 1) wrapped up at the main event site, Ribera D’Ilhas, in Ericeira, Portugal, on Wednesday, June 15th.
The 20th heat was won by Brazil’s Heitor Alves, while Northern Spain’s Hodei Collazo took second position to extend his life in the competition. Brazil’s Pedro Henrique and Germany’s Nic Von Rupp rounded out the bottom two positions to get eliminated
from the title contention.
In heat 21, it was Australia’s Julian Wilson who finished in top position, while France’s Joan Duru rounded out the runner-up position to advance to the next round as well. Spain’s Gony Zubizarreta and Reunion’s Medi Veminardi finished in third and fourth
positions respectively, getting ejected from the event title race as a result.
Even though surfing conditions at the primary event site were not ideal, it was still not enough to keep Alves from going on a rampage. In the early stages of the heat, he caught a wave and threw down a set of impressive flips and turns to score 8.17 points
off it. A little later, he added a 7.40 to his score with his second wave to finish with a two-wave total of 15.57 points. The wonderful effort and resulting score carried him off to victory and the next round.
Collaza tried hard to stay at par with Alves' amazing performance, but ended up falling short and finishing in second place. He collected a 6.67 and 8.13 from his two good waves to end the heat with a total of 14.80 points.
Henrique’s performance was not disappointing either. He managed to get 14.46 points from his two waves and almost made it into the safe zone till Collazo came up with an excellent second wave. Hence, Henrique had to join Rupp, who had merely scored 10.07
points from his two waves, in the elimination list.
Heat 21 completely belonged to Wilson. The young Australian completely dominated the 30-minute contest with his superb performance. Locking the very first wave, he threw down a few impressive turns to earn 8.33 points off it. Not quite done yet, he caught
the very next wave to collect a near-perfect score of 9.27. Finishing with 17.60 points, he surfed to victory.
Duru’s performance was quite impressive as well, but was overshadowed by Wilson’s rampage. Earning an identical score of 7.67 off both his waves, he finished as runner-up, advancing to the next round as a result.
Zubizarreta finished in third position with a two-wave total of 12.26 points, while Veminardi looked completely out of rhythm and only managed 5.20 points in total from his two waves. Both surfers were removed from the event title contention.
