Heitor Alves claims victory in Round 3 of the ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro
Brazil’s Heitor Alves walked away with top honours from the 17th heat of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro’s Round 3 (Round of 96) that went down at the popular beach-break of Lower Trestles in San Clemente,
California, on Wednesday, May 2.
The top-place finished resulted in the confirmation of his place in Round 4 (Round of 48) of the competition. America’s Conner Coffin managed to secure his place in the next round as well by grabbing runner-up position.
Getting some of the most promising local talent and putting them in a field comprising of some of the best surfers from around the world, which included the ASP World Tour contenders, one could expect nothing short of a series of spectacular battles featuring
intense action. The clean two-to-four foot waves served as an ideal stage to host the showdown between the surfing talents as they pursed a huge slice of the prize purse, along with the coveted ASP ranking points.
The clean two-to-four waves breaking at the primary event site sent plenty of potential scoring opportunities in the direction of the surfers during the course of the event.
The 17th heat of Round 3 pitted Alves against Coffin, Australia’s Nic Muscroft and French Polynesia’s Alain Riou in a four-man battle for the Round 4 spot.
The Brazilian surfer adjusted quite well to the conditions at hand to put on a brilliant performance. Even though he did not attack too many waves during the course of the heats, he managed to make a couple of waves that he caught really count. Locking his
first business-wave in the late minutes of the heat, he posted an 8.67 on the score-board and went on to back it up with a 7.50-point wave for a heat-total of 16.17 points. The score earned him victory and thus carried him through into the next round.
Coffin successfully made the Round 4 cut as well after scoring a 6.37 off his first business-wave and followed it up with a 7.03-point wave for a heat-total of 13.40 points.
Muscroft barely missed out on making the Round 4 cut after finishing with a two-wave total of 11.36 points, while Riou rounded out the bottom-position after scoring a heat-total of 9.37 points. This resulted in the elimination of the two surfers from the
latest ASP PRIME event.
