Heitor Alves succumbs to Alejo Muniz in Round 3 of Billabong Rio Pro – Surfing News
Brazil’s Alejo Muniz took down his fellow countryperson Heitor Alves in the fifth heat of Billabong Rio Pro’s Round 3 that continued at the main event site of Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Tuesday, May 15.
With a successful result in his Round 3 bout, Muniz advanced through into the fourth round of the latest stop on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour. Alves, on the other hand, found himself removed from the contention for the event
title.
Running at the primary event site for the second consecutive day, Billabong Rio Pro continued to treat the fans to a satisfying dose of thrilling action featuring the world’s best surfers. The battles were as intense as ever, with the three-to-five foot
barrels serving as an ideal stage for the elite surfers to push their limits and come up with performances that would surely be remembered for a long time.
Successful in holding their own in the tough conditions that had graced the primary as well as secondary event site during the previous two rounds, Muniz and Alves found themselves coming face-to-face in a battle for survival. They both were quite familiar
with the waves on offer and thus were expected to put on a tough fight to try and knock the other one out of the competition.
As the heat kicked-off, the 22-year-old Muniz wasted little time to stamp his authority in the battle. He swiftly moved into position to get hold of a barrel, which he utilised to post an impressive 8.77 on the score-board. Going through a series of ordinary
waves, he eventually added an additional 4.57 points to his account to settle for a two-wave total of 13.34 points.
Alves did not look too comfortable in the barrelling conditions at hand. The local talent struggled to read the waves correctly and thus only managed to lock three waves during the course of the heat. His first business-wave earned him 0.83 points, but a
much better effort on the next wave allowed him to collect an impressive 7.67. The combined wave-total of 8.50 points posed no threat to Muniz’s heat-total, thus causing Alves to bow out to the latter.
