At our cottage recently we saw a large helicopter, flying fairly low, carrying a large suspended circular net or web-like object. We want to know what it is.

  1. It quite possibly was something round in a cargo net, but that's just a wild guess on my part.

And since we have no idea where your cottage is, as far as the correct continent anyway, it's hard to narrow it down.

  2. cargo net. anything bulky can be wrapped into the cargo net, and then transported to its destination... artilerry shells, ammunition, supplies, whatever gets delivered in crates.

  3. Known facts:

helicopter, cottage , circular net carrying large object

Assumed :  Hilly terain , non transportable object by regular methods , cargo net carring some sort of payload worth a helicopter ride.

Inferred : large helicopter , recreational or holiday cottage in mountain area or non-moterable area, cargo net not empty(cargo net won't take a shape unless carrying any thing)

Details that would have helped:  type of heli , description of object in the net or web , location of cottage with geographical details, idea of local constructions projects, nearest airport.

  4. Was there a fire somewhere? When I first saw these, I'd just moved from the city to a rural area. There were some fires burning in the hills some miles away, and I was told that the suspended, circular object was a container of water; that the helicopter actually flies to where a body of water is, (such as our local resevoir at the time) scoops up water in the container just by dipping it into the water as it hovers above,  then flies to where the fire is. I now live in a different rural area, where every summer, there are usually several fires in the moutains near us. I've again seen these objects hanging from the numerous helicopters flying around during these times. I never see them at other times. So, I think that the explanation I was given was correct.

  5. Its a whale net. Its the new easy method for whale capture. The chopper drops the nets on the whales and the whaling ships come and pick it up. It will be on the plates of hungry j*p's within a day. Those nips sure are efficient!
