I have been ice skating for about 7 months now, i have lessons on a weekly basis, but i suffer with terrible cramp when i skate, i recently bought my own ice skates as i thought the cause of the cramp would be the hire skates, these have not helped. I bought insoles with arch support, but these still have not helped either, i have been told everything from, eat bananas, to stretch your feet before skating, but nothing works! its got to the point where i spend more time off the ice resting me feet than i actually spend skating! I have been told that the cramp could be caused my me curling my toes which i do tend to do, i dont know how to avoid this though???

Does anyone have any suggestions that might help me pleeeeeeeeeeease??

  1. I the same problem!  I broke in my skates in during the winter, then in the sping and summer it felt like my foot was stretching and cramping.  I asked my coach and she said if I wear sandles thats why.  So I can't wear flip-flops, sandles or anything like that!  She said that if you wear sandles your feet have no support,  But if you wear sneakers it almost like wearing a skate.  In the winter I wore Uggs, so that was ok.  But now i wear Nike sneakers all the time!  Nothing else, except for a funeral, beach of somthing like that.  After I started wearing Sneakers the pain went away!  I only get it if I wear the wrong shoes.  Good luck with your skating.  Thank you for posting your question!

  2. There are two major things that come to my mind- either your skates don't fit properly any longer, OR you have high arches like I do, could benefit from orthotics.  Kimmie Meissner's dad, who is a podiatrist, ordered me some from Foot maxx, traced from my skate insole, and they alleviated the same symptoms you describe.  You should get it checked, b/c you could end up with major plantar fasciitis, or achilles tendon issues.

  3. Why do you curl your toes? Are your skates too tight?

I've been playing hockey for about 10 years now (I'm 21) and I get cramps in my feet on occasion. I just relax my feet and try to stretch them out (while my skates are still on) and they usually go away.

But you know, try something... just while you're at home, try waking around on JUST your big toes and your heels - don't put the middle of your feet on the ground. Do this for a while, and you might feel the cramping your describing. This essentially happens if you curl your toes and skate, so that may be the cause. I would say just try and relax your feet a bit more while you skate, especially if it's just for leisure and a ton of speed/power isn't necessary).

(ps. in case you're wondering...I have a tendency to do that heel and big toe thing naturally when the ground is really cold or wet and I don't want my feet to get cold/wet... haha. That's how I know it causes cramps!!)

  4. you could be curling your toes because your skates are too small, have your feet measured and see if you need new boots in a bigger size.
