Brazilians and Immigrants? What are the chances of me facing some kind of prejudice being a Brazilian and a woman?

  1. I do know of a couple who were from Brazil and they didn't experience any prejudice (they were in Wellington). What they did notice, however, was a difference in culture and people. For instance, they found NZers, and particularly Wellingtonians far more reserved and quiet. They didnt have a problem with this when they realised that NZers were simply had a different culture. Does that make sense? The example my friend gave was that when she would greet her friends in Brazil it was common to give them a kiss. In NZ, it was relatively common to hug, but the kissing part...not so much. She thought she touched people more than NZers did (whether hugging, kissing, touching arms etc) and was a bit louder in her general behaviour and thought that she should appear to be quieter.

Funnily enough, that is what people liked about her! So she never really had a problem with people :)

Good luck. I am sure you will enjoy it.

  2. I'm from New Zealand and honestly we love meeting people from different countries. The majority of New Zealanders are really friendly and you'll find people will probably be kinder to you knowing you are from Brazil.

  3. NZ is a melting pot of different cultures so people are generally very accepting of others and would warmly welcome you.  Although NZ is a rugby mad country football has also become very popular so the fact you're from Brazil gives you an automatic pass!  Any woman travelling alone to any country in the world has to keep safety in mind and NZ is no exception.  Where will you be studying?

  4. Truly, from my experience, as long as you can speak English well, they probably won't even notice you. New Zealand is a country of Immigrants.

  5. Don't worry.

Apart from the few, very few bigots, (and you get them the world over) there is no prejudice against women, Brazilians, or immigrants.

I know you'll enjoy your 6 months here!

  6. new zealand is bacicly all immigrants! we all play spot the nzr amongst the foraners because we are so outnumberd that cing another nzr gets sooooooo rear in citys! all indians and asains here! where all gud abot it tho

  7. Very slim. Especially the woman part. NZ was the first place to give women the vote, it's not at all sexist here, well, as much as I have experienced.

  8. NZers in general are very kind to south americans in general. Not all NZers like asians, but south americans are very well liked in general.

  9. NZ people are very free and relaxed, it is a slow paced country compared to something like NYC. Everyone is relaxed, friendly and patient. There are a lot of foreigners who backpack through NZ. I dont think there is a high chance of you being abused as such, people are friendly and will be willing to help. Your english seems fine, so I dont think you will have any troubles. What country are u going to and what are u studying?? :-):-)

Hope u enjoy your time here. :-):-)
