I'm flying out of the country soon, so I need to take a shot. I'm really scared of needles. When I see them, I stop breathing and I don't let anybody get near me. Last time, my parents and a nurse had to hold me down so the doctor could give me my shot. I don't wanna start freaking out again. Is there anybody who can give me advice on how to stay calm?

  1. Well take someone down there with you and

tell that someone to make jokes and laugh while the nurse poke you with the needle...

  2. youre just like me! I always used to be like this...up until this year. I had to get my blood drawn recently and all you have to do is close your eyes really really really tight. If you keep concentrating on keeping your eyes tightly shut then the shot is over with right away. Whatever you do though: dont tense your arm..it will hurt worse, plus youll be sore afterward.  So ya, thats what I do. Squeeze your eyes shut, breath, and turn your head the other way. Im sure similar advice has been given, because I've been given plenty of advice, but this really really works! Promise!

  3. Try to realize you will only feel the needle for a short time.

The amount of fear in your head does not match the actual pain of the needle.  You have built up the experience way beyond what actually happens.  Try to fully relax the muscles in your arm while the needle is being injected.  This helps so it will not hurt later. Turn your head the other way so you won't have to see what is going on.   Good Luck.

  4. I took a shot for the same reason.

LOOK AWAY! hahaha. It won't hurt, but if you think it would really irk you just look away.

  5. im the same way im grown and i still start balling like a baby but its really all just in your head because you know you've experienced much worse pain just take deep breathes close your eyes and dont watch it. GOOD LUCK :)

  6. Likewise, I too hate needles.  I would always psyche myself up because I was afraid of the ohsotiny pain.  Now, before I go in, I tell myself I like the needle.  I like the pain, I like the shot.  I like the bandaid, things like that.  It always works for me.

  7. man i faint whenever i get a needle near me and the only times i havnt is where i took a walkman and played some music to my self with my eyes slightly closed or thort no its not a needle it a small thorn or anything really to take the thort of the needle and replace it with another object thay could give me a wee prick.

  8. Think about something worse, like taking blood or fluid out with a needle.  That's what I do.  Also, when they are about to administer the shot, talk to the nurse or doctor.  Clamming up sucks for this situation.  Also, the more you clam the more it hurts.  Why do you think they have to 'hold you down', its a diversion mind trick.  Make up your own like 'Ok, doc hurry the h**l up I aint got all day'.  This works wonders!  Hope this helps!

  9. The best way of getting a shot so it won't hurt is not to watch when they are ready to give you the shot. See the more relaxed your arm is the less it will hurt. I have gotten shots that never hurt at all. Just relax your arm, don't watch, think of somewhere nice you would like to be and imagine being there and tell them not to tell you when they are going to stick you. Let them know ahead of time that you are terrified of needles. But I promise you if you can just relax your arm, just let it kind of hang there, imagine being somewhere else and by all means don't watch. When you watch you tense up which makes it hurt more just relax your arm and don't watch. Try it.

  10. Ok... i just got my blood work done... and that's done with a needle. To stay calm maybe bring a CD... DO NOT look at the needle... hold your moms hand or dads whatever! Tap your feet, concentrate on something else. Talk to your mom! If you go alone have whoever brings you come with you in the doctors. Then just talk to them... do not think you are getting a shot, someone pinched you... thats all.
