Question:

Hello All. I am angered and stymied as usual when I look at the Internet and glance at the Popular searches.?

All of the searches pertain to prepackage pablum c**p like Brooke Hogan and other, well, I won't say stars, because that person does not deserve any adulation, but what are people thinking. There were 20 listing of top searches and not one pertained to anything but entertainment and the clowns on stage. We, the people need to pull together and use this stupid internet for more than stupid things. How about looking for ways to organize people to do good things for each other. I am sick as a dog on Social Security and can't even do c**p, but I do volunteer at the local hospital. As many of you that read this question I challenge to do something to make a difference on our planet, in our society other than gawp at Paris Hilton's latest t*t-slip. Why are Americans so Shallow?

  1. Well, you're going to be especially sad when you realize the rest of the world wishes to do the same. People are idiots and this is why they fall prey to advertisers. America set the mold but everyone wishes to follow suit. Why do you think our Hollywood is so worldwide? It's all socioeconomic theory. Read Marx, he was amazing at predicting the ills of society that would be a result of capitalism, because essentially, it is all due to that; and is only getting worse.

  2. Well, I dont know about anyone else, but I work all day, bust my hump, and try to survive the best I can.  And when I get home after all the stress, I just want to unwind.  I don't want more stress by reading up on disease, famine, war, politics, ect.  I want entertainment. And that's what the internet is to me.  Me reading where Paris Hilton went last night should not reflect me as being shallow, uneducated, or uncaring.

  3. I don't know how different it would be but, have you tried looking at the top searches for a more respected search engine?  Yahoo is used by younger people, kids, etc.  People who are doing school work or trying to learn about new things wouldn't use yahoo.  They would use something like google.  I mean look at the "news" articles on yahoo's homepage.  Barely news at all, in my opinion.  Yahoo and its top searches are not what I would base the character of the American people on.  Plus, like another poster said, it is an international search engine.

  4. I don't think our culture is shallow, as a whole, though there are many people in our culture who are. We have a pluralistic culture but the one thing that ties people together is the media. Almost everyone can relate to the tabloid trash, to the popular tv show of the week, and some people simply don't have a lot of other interesting stuff going on in their life to focus on. So I think its natural that some people would dig into the tabloid trash for quick interest and topics of interest to laugh about with their friends.

The fact that the tabloid trash came up as the "most searched" item does not mean that it is the number one topic of interest to everyone who did a search.  Some may have other intellectual interests that they do not google, but rather read about in books, newspaper, & magazines or learn about on radio shows. The internet is geared to provide a surface understanding, on any number of topics, not to provide indepth understanding of topics. So, when people come to the internet they are more likely to seek "popcorn" type topics than really "full course dinner" topics. An individual who is into theater, volunteers at the animal shelter, and works in education might also click on Britney Spear when they visit yahoo just for kicks, just for a 30 second read. You might not know about their other interests, by trackign website hits, because they engage those interests in other venues.

  5. That's like saying "with all the consequences why is almost everyone having pre-marital s*x" it's called stupidity.
