The most significant change was from hot metal presses set up physically to make the printing plates to digital printing which removes this process.

This was important because the old printing works were in the stranglehold of the militant print unions (SOGAT). The new technology alllowed the owners (principally Rupert Murdoch) to negotiate new deals with electricians unions instead. (The Times newspaper disappeared for months as the result of a strike). This revolutionised working practices, and saw the deaprture of the major titles from Fleet Street to more economic premises at Wapping.

Digital printing meant that copy could be sent lectronically around the country to local printing works where they could be printed out - saving distribution costs. One of the first people to use the new technology was Eddie Shah whose Today paper was prinited in colour - although the results were a bit bizarre.
