  1. Most Zen centers offer an "introduction" class in which you will be taught most of what you need to know.

You'll learn the basics of meditation and maybe a little about chanting. You might also learn a little about Zen history or the overall meaning of Zen practice.

At our local Zen center, the introduction takes about 30 minutes. It's pretty easy to learn -- the rest is just practice.

You'll be most comfortable if you wear loose-fitting pants and dark clothes without logos or bright patterns. Avoid anything too revealing.

When you visit, remember that all those people who seem to be so knowledgeable were once exactly in your shoes -- they didn't know anything either. And so they won't expect you to be anyone except who you are!

    Have a great time!

  2. when i took world religions we went to a zen place of worship. he made us meditate and i did a full lotus and it almost killed me.... ouch!  i wouldn't know if there is a dress code because it was a class field trip.
