Ryanair seems to be a good choice.

But you can use Vueling...a low cost airline

It has flights to Barcelona, Madrid and Sevilla from Milan, Rome and Venice.

I really recommend them...but you should take a small suitcase...and be early to catch the flight. Otherwise they are quite good...and CHEAP. If you buy your ticket in advance you could fly round trip for less than 100 Euros.

If you take the train be prepared to spend at least 13-15 hours on board each and spend at least 150 Euros, since you cross France. Also the food on the train is not cheap, but to be honest the views by the Alps are quite nice.

The people suggesting the train need their heads examined.

Spain-Italy-Spain is a trip my wife and I have done many many times..car, train, plane, boat ...you name it!!

Without a doubt the cheapest quickest cleanest least traumatic is by plane. Check the low cost carriers.

The trains in Italy are absolute s**+te..... expensive, dirty, rude service, no signs or explanations etc. etc. don't even go there!

The only thing I'll let an Italian drive is my golf cart (maybe).

Well I don't know where you're comin out of and going to. But there is a website for air travel:

It's a cheapo website that serves Rome, Pisa, Sicily and Venice for sure and goes to Barcelona I know forsure. I'm going to Rome out of Germany and it's costing me about 100 dollars for 3 round trip tickets. I recently looked at a flight to Spain from Germany and it was about 30 dollars for a round trip. It's worth looking into!!

if you have to travel inside Italy train is the best thing. However, if you have to go to Spain is easy to find a low cost flight!

What a wonderful way to see the Riviera for cheap.

I took the train in 2000 from Barcelona, Spain to San Remo, Italy in a day.  Loved the views.  Most Americans like the First Class car.  It's non-smoking and usually much less crowded.  The seats are comfortable and aren't really that much more.  

Catching views of the Mediteranian and the small coastal towns - and a few cities along the way - like going through the "golden" station in Monte Carlo - wow!!  Worth it.

Start early and make a day of it.  Reserve in advance and get seats on the south side of the car.  Take a camera.

It truly was a great trip.

You didn't mention which Italian city would be your starting point. Such a train ride can take up to 12 hours. You might want to consider taking an over-night train, with your own couchette. If you have a rail pass, you can travel in first class without any additional charge.

the train is an excellent choise...i am just back from a holiday and it was perfect confortable and with air conditioner
