  1. The D80 offers some additional features, but they are both very similar. I would start with the D60, you already know the controls and are familiar with it. You can always upgrade later. Many camera shops do take trade ins when people upgrade their cameras. Although I doubt you will need to. The D60 will serve you well for years. You are better off saving the money and buying accessories for the D60.

  2. These two cameras are very similar. I believe that they use the same image sensor, utilize roughly similar filtering technology and image processing technologies. I think dpreview compared the images taken with these two cameras for the D60 review.

The major difference is in the supported set of lenses that can auto-focus with the two bodies. That mostly matters to people who had purchased high end Nikon lenses for their film cameras, and are now migrating to the DSLRs. D80 supports autofocus on more lenses than the D60. If that's not a concern, I would suggest the D60 or the D40.

  3. The Nikon series goes from Nikon D40 to D60 to D80 (and then the high-end 300s and all that).

The D60 is more expensive and better than the D40, and the D80 is more expensive and better than the D60.

There are a THOUSAND similarities, but the D80, yes, is the slightly the next step above the D60 model than the, and if you have the money, GO FOR IT!

I personally went with the D60 because of the price difference and so I have extra cash to splurge on lenses, which make all the difference when it comes to DSLR photography.

Many people decide to upgrade, like my mother upgraded from the D40 to the D60- many camera shops take trade-ins when you feel it's time to upgrade, although you wouldn't "need" to upgrade if buying the D60- the D60 is a fabulous camera and will get the job done fantastically.
