Hello - I am leaving on a 15day transatlantic cruise Oct. 24th. I will be in Rome for 5 days and then stops in Livorno, Malaga, Spain,Funchal, Portugal and finally Miami. What will the temperature be like in each place and what will the weather be like crossing the ocean? Sunny and warm for suntans, sandals, sleeveless dresses and shorts ?? Or cool weather for jackets, sweaters, and long pants ?? We've got a balcony and I was really hoping the weather would be warm enough for us to use it! This is a trip of a lifetime for us and I want it to be all it can be. Any helpful hints, suggestion or advice would be greatfully appreciated. Many Thanks.

  1. Rome and the other stops will be in the mid 70's during your visit in October.

The crossing may be alittle chilly at night - probably in the 70's during the and high 60's at night.  You will definitely be able to use your balcony.

Arriving in Miami will be hot - probably high 80's.

Enjoy your cruise - sounds wonderful.

  2. Google it.  Or write to the cruise director's website.

  3. We did a cruise of the Mediterranean a couple years ago in October and for the most part the weather was very pleasant.  Temperatures in Barcelona, Nice, Florence, Rome and Pompeii were in the 70's and sun shiny.  We did have showers a couple days for a short time.  I sat on the balcony several nights in just slacks and a long sleeved shirt and it was very pleasant.

We will also be doing a Western Med cruise in October (25th) leaving from Barcelona and going to a couple ports in Spain, then Portugal, Morocco, Gibraltar and the Canary Islands.  I have looked at weather patterns in that area for our cruise and have planned to wear the same as I wore the last time we were in that area. I will take shorts for using the gym and lounging around the cabin.  Long pants and long sleeved shirts for tours and a light jacket (like a golf jacket) just in case it is cool or rainy.

I have not yet done a trans-oceanic cruise but we did do a cruise to the Baltic through the North Sea last year and here's my opinion.  Most ships have a pool/hot  area that is shielded from the wind.  Some ships even have a solarium which is a covered pool area with a sliding top that can be opened when the weather is nice. So even if there is a stiff breeze, you can still go to the pools and hot tub and sit around them on deck.  Some ships also have fiberglass windbreakers on many upper decks so that you can walk and not get the full force of the wind.  So plan on using all of the ships outdoor features, including the balcony.  I know I used both the balcony and the top decks on both the Med cruise and the cruise to the Baltic.

  4. All I can really say is: Weather is elusive. Forecasts are nothing more than educated guesses. I'm not sure if you've ever noticed that they will say a 70% chance to rain and it'll be sunny all day, but that's the result of a premature guess. IF you want my guess, I'd say probably between 30-70 degrees Fahrenheit with winds from 5-45mph. Good idea: pack for a shift toward winter, possibly high winds. Best idea: wait until it's closer to the time you leave to know the probable weather.

  5. Are you really questioning or just  showing off??   Anyway , I envy  and congratulate you , anyway , go to weather.com , and do so very close to the departing day , so you could get a accurate info ... but anyway, enjoy!!!

  6. october in that region tends to be in the 70's

i would check with weather.com closer to when you are set to leave.

i would plan for a little cooler at night

there s a great website for planning your cruise wardrobe.

  7. All those stops are pretty moderate when it comes to temperature. I wouldn't just pack sundresses though. I would definitely pack half and half--bring warmer clothes for the evening and cooler clothes like crop pants for the afternoon. As far as the temperature on the ocean, again the weather at night gets quite chilly. It will still be beautiful but it won't be uber-warm.

  8. It will be calm and warm except for a brief squall with 170mph. winds and hailstones the size of Volkswagens.

  9. go to weather.com and check it out there!!

  10. Hmm...I'll ask God and get back to you. My hunch, however, is that it will be sunny and breezy with intermittent and variably extended periods of rain.
