  1. The ending of your familly name (-ios) is definitely greek-like. The -gh- sound reminds also of greek phthongs. So there is a high possibility that you have greek origin. Its meaning though is not clear as many greek family names are derivatives of foreign languages sounding like greek. For example, George Stephanopoulos, the famous Greek-American politician, has a greco-latin surname. It derives from greek Stephanos (=Stephen) and the hellenized latin ending -poulos from latin pullus which means "son of". So your familly name reminds me of hellenized latin word (very common such surnames among greeks because of their Eastern Roman Empire past- like the greek surname Reghas which derives from the latin Rex=king). Maybe one of your ancestors was an officer in the -so called- Byzantine Empire or had such a nickname.

  2. Are you Greek Orthodox and from a family actually living in Lebanon? That would be the most definitive question in that part of the world. If the family was Catholic, they were probably not Greek but spoke a language similar to Greek. If the family is Muslim, the answer is they were probably Ottomans. That takes in many Greek-speaking people from west of what we now call Turkey. But you can't tell ethnicity (especially in that part of the world) based solely on linguistics. There were too many invasions in both directions and too many conquerors who imposed their languages on people who had no genetic links to them.

  3. No, i don't think this name is Greek (i'm Greek)... However, talk to your elders as the people above suggest...

  4. I think you do have a greek origin somewhere along the line.

  5. I suggest you talk with your elders.

  6. it does sound greek.
