Hi, It is not a matter of the shortest distance.  It is a matter of the best route and the safest.

The shortest would be the longest in terms of time because the winding roads are loaded with "Topes" speed bumps and potholes.

I would say make your way to Laredo and head for Mexico city (hwy 57) and there are toll roads that will set you back just under a hundred bucks but well worth it.

Keep in mind gas is a little more than in the U.S .

I don't know your reason for wanting to drive but there are much cheaper and safer ways of getting to Cancun.

If its adventure then it is a great drive that I have done more than a few times.

Are you sure you want to do that? it's a looooooooooooooong way! just from Cancun to Mexico city about 1,500 km, about 24 hours, and that's not even half way.

You'll have to make several stops along the way to sleep, it'll take you about 2, 3 days depending on how tired you want to feel on your arrival.

Try quoting a flight.
