  1. You will be in Edinburgh during the annual Festival so all your time will be taken up with the countless acts, plays, concerts, street performers, puppets, book fair, Science fair, Military Tattoo.

I hope you've booked your accommodation as there is usually not a bed to be had!

  2. visit 1 the Falkirk wheel, 2 the Museum of Childhood in Edinburgh itself, 3 let them run around the Botanic Gardens also in the city. 4 drive down the coast to the seaside at north berwick.5 visit Sealife centre at South Queensferry. have a great holiday ihope the sun will be shining by then.

  3. loch lomand, its nearer glasgow i think, but its really beautifull and you could take a picnic and let the kids run around and use up all their energy so they can sleep in the car on the way back!

  4. If your kids don't mind scary things, there are the ghost walks and Edinburgh dungeons to visit.

The castle and the zoo are obviously favourites and great to visit.  :)

There's also the Sea Life Centre at Queensferry.

  5. First 2 answers cover a good selection. Sea Life, Castle, Ghost Walks, Museum of Childhood, North Berwick and Falkirk wheel are all things I've done and are good suggestions.  I guess it depends on the age of your boys as to what you might visit.  The places we tend to go to or might also add are:

Edinburgh Zoo.  As above worthwhile. They've done up the Chimp house and its really good and educational.  Lions, penguins and monkeys are generally enough for most kids, plus the soft play at the cafe.

Almond Valley Heritage Centre, Livingston - Small museum, animals, tractor ride, bouncy castle, trampolines.

Linlithgow - Nice town about 30 mins from Edinburgh.  Old Palace/Castle and loch with ducks and a decent play area.

Museum of flight, East Lothian.  Out towards North Berwick/Dunbar.  Decent range of planes including Concorde.

Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway, Bo'ness.  Open weekends as its volunteer run.  Run steam trains on a shortish line, with trips down a clay mine at one end.  Plus a small, but ever improving, railway museum.

St Andrews - Just over an hour away.  Nice town for a day trip.  As well as the golf, there's 3 beaches, with play areas for kids at one.  The castle is also quite good with a dungeon and escape tunnels that you can go down.

Royal Yacht Britannia - Berthed in Leith (attached to Edinburgh) and entrance via the shopping centre.
