  1. All of the modelling agencys are scams that ask for money up front.

I signed up to modelsdirect and they wanted £128 for it, so stupid me paid for it, i heard nothing so i asked for a refund and they gave me £24 back so i have reported them to watchdog and threatened to take them to court if they dont give me the full amount!

I would phone places instead of doing it online.

If they ask for money up front, dont do it as you will regret it.

  2. You need to contact modeling agencies in your area.  If they advertise in the newspaper classifieds, they are probably not legitimate-check your phone book.

Visit them and interview them.  Do not sign anything!  Take it home and look it over.  Contact the BBB and get feedback reports.  Hint to the agency that you are going to have a lawyer look the information over, and consider actually doing so.

Be aware that some agencies will throw around a big name.  That does not mean that they are responsible for that big name's fame and fortune-it could be that the person was involved with that agency for a short period of time years before they "made it", and the agency had no real part in their success.  The agency is not doing anything illegal here, but it is misrepresenting.

Unless you live in a big market, there ARE going to be some costs and it does not mean that the agency is a scam.  Agencies in smaller markets can not absorb the costs before the talent is making them money, as there are no guarantees that you will.  That is another thing to look for-if they guarantee you anything, it is a scam.

However, if they are forcing you to use one specific photographer, that is a common scam.  They can tell you the type of photos you need, but they can not force you to use one photographer.  If your child is under the age of 4, you do not need expensive photos at all-just keep the agency supplied with a variety of recent snapshots.  Update them frequently.  Children change so much at that age that professional photos are a waste of money.

Your child needs to be more than cute to model-s/he needs to work well with strangers, and be patient during long waits.  You need to be available on short notice, and have a babysitter for any other children (one parent and one child on a call, unless both children were called for the same job).  You also need to be able to let others take charge of your child.  If you show the traits of a stage mother, you and your child will quickly be dismissed and you will not get future calls.

There are some well known, legitimate agencies in larger markets but unless you live near there then they are of no help to you (unless you are willing to move there and pay living expenses to see if your child will get anything), and unless you are in my area, I can not give you any information about agencies.  I hope this helps you out some, though.

  3. A colleague of mine took her son to one of those agencies and was asked to pay £40 registration fee, £128 for a photo-shoot and some other amount to keep the son's pics in their files. That was six months ago, so far she's not heard a word from the agency.

My point? I totally agree with the above answer.
