Question:

Hello everyone, can a female canary take care of the chicks by herself? I'm afraid she'll tire herself out.

I have a female canary and a male canary, and they just had a couple of eggs. The female is sitting on the eggs right now, but the male is bothersome to her and keeps on annoying her. I separated the male to a new cage, but what I'm worried about is that when the chicks hatch the female will have to go get food by herself and feed the chicks. If the male was in there he'll get the food and feed the female to feed the chicks. I don't know whether anyone has ever done this before or seen it happen?

  1. When at all possible I like to leave the male in the cage with the female to help rear the babies. Some females do a great job by themselves others not so well. This is one of those instances that you have to know your own breeding stock. Have you bought a book about canary breeding? If not then shame on you for trying to do something like this with no knowledge. There is more to it than just putting two birds together. READ READ READ READ

  2. As long the male isn't injuring the female, or trying to destroy eggs, keep the male in the same cage. It will make it easier on the female after the hatch.

If you don't want to do that, than the female will just have to be on her own. Watch her and the chicks for a few days and make sure the chicks are fed and the female isn't completely exhausted! If something goes wrong, you may have to intervene and start feeding the chicks on your own.
