  1. Listen to them- If you ever have ANY reason for an insurance claim, the first thing [insurance companies] look for is a PERMIT for any home improvements they find.

Skimping here can only s***w you later, and if anyone ever got hurt because something wasn't done right, you'd loose the house.   Or worse- live with the regrets.

There's a reason us electricians have to carry $1 to 2 mil. in liability insurance.  Especially in this sue-happy society.

  2. Call the hot tub manufacturer and determine what amp breaker you will need to use.  Then you might either want to install a new breaker by detatching some other existing circuit; add the new line to an existing circuit that can handle the additional load or, add a small breaker box next to the original one and have the power co cut off power from the pole so you can tap the trunk line.  Personally, I would go with choice 2.  Good luck and be careful.

  3. Workmanblues,

Woodstock is right water and power don't mix.

get a licensed electrician to give you a quote and if you want to keep costs down ask if you may assist him/her in running conduit or new line out for your hot tub...

Better to be safe than sorry..

  4. Call a qualified professional electrician to do the work. An error near a hot tub or pool, can easily be fatal, and result in lawsuits.  Since you ask about a sub panel, you do not have the expertise to do the work safely in a workmanlike manner.

      Call the pro.

  5. Might I suggest that you get a licensed electrician to come in for that. You don't want to mess around with that kind of power if you don't know what to do. It can hurt/kill you and it could go faulty and burn down your house. Just pay the extra few bucks and have it done right. If you have a hot tub then I'm sure you can afford an electrician.

  6. listen to these guys. it fairly simple to wire a sub-panel if you have extra lugs in your current box. but with the hot tub you have to have a dedicated GFCI circuit and you want all of this to be correct or your tub could be really "hot". call a licensed electrican. this is no job for a JACK LEG wire puller.
