  1. I was in a similar situation when my son was in preschool (hes 10 now) I was told by my pediatrician that they wont even do the testing untill age five unless there is a family history of adhd.  We got the most help from our pediatrician.  Good Luck!!

  2. adad??

There is a conner's scale that the school can fill out and you can fill out and it will show if the child should be tested further. Start with your pediatrician and they will send you to a place that will test your child. If you have insurance I would do it myself and then bring the documentation to the school.

  3. The ONLY legal way a school can do anythign to help a child with ADHD or any other problem is that the child HAS to be in special ed or have 504 plan.  If a child does not have one of these, the school does not have to do anything.

I assume your child is in special ed. Special ed is mandated by FEDERAL law called IDEA and this law helps children starting at age 3.

So YES they ARE suppose to be helping him NOW

You need to make a list of all your childs problems in school and then list ways the school can help.

Then write a letter requesting an IEP meeting. Take your lists to the IEP meeting and ask for the help you wrote down. If they say they can't help till he's 5, ask them to show you the law in writing that states this. THERE IS NONE.

If they refuse ANY of the help you ask for, after the meeting write another letter and request 'prior written notice' of their refusals, and list each thing they refused.

By law they are to have LEGAL reasons for refusing anything and are suppose to give your their reasons in WRITING in this prior written notice.

If they DO have legal reasons for refusing, they should not hesitate giving you this notice. But if they DONT" have legal reasons, they won't give it to you at all becuase they will not put 'illegal' reasons in writing.

If they don't give this to you, then you file a formal state complaint with your state dept of education.  If the school in fact does NOT have a LEGAL reason for refusing what you ask for, at this point they will 'magically' change their minds and do what you ask, because they won't want the state to know they made 'illegal' decisions.

Go to www.wrightslaw.com  to get info on how the school is suppose to help with ADHD.

  4. How old is your child? Go to the pediatrician and ask for the referral to a child clinical psychologist. They can do testing and diagnose the problem if there is one. The reports go into alot of detail and break down the categories of any learning impairments. If possible find one that is also licensed as a school psychologist. This way the school really doesn't have the right to refuse the outside eval. Yes it is true that they don't like to diagnose a child before a certain age. Even if they can tell there is a problem. They may give a vague diagnosis that is followed by NOS. (not otherwise specified) It indicates the problem without actually giving the label. Below are links to sites that may help.
