  1. "Bonjour" means "Good Day!" and is rather standard.

    "Salut" also means "Hello", as well as "Goodbye", kind of like "Ciao" in Italian and "Aloha" in Hawaiian.  You would maybe use it more on someone you knew, at least somewhat.  However, it probably would work, as well.

  3. Bonjour is the standard.  In the evening you could say bonsoir if you want.  

    Salut is usually used only if you're surprised to see someone, at least according to my first French teacher who was from Annecy, France.
