I have a Cal 29 and will take out the fixed ports and fair it in and then put in new opening ports. I've never done this and could use some advice. Anybody out there to give some professional advice. Thank you, April.

  1. Make sure that the substrate (the area around the area you're glassing over) is solid- no dry rot, etc. Keep it clean- no oils, minimal moisture, etc. Try to keep everything tight, and use a void filler (bondo is great) to fill any gaps between your new port and the old holes- sand smooth, and make a sandwich with matting and woven roven. No air bubbles, clean up with acetone, and make sure you use a no-wax resin, or you'll be sanding like crazy to get any paint to stick!

  2. Well the most obvious stuff is make sure you ports are the correct size. Keep your surface area's real clean, as you need to use a sealant to keep them from leaking 4200 is a good product but there is a silicon/ poly blend that is good. Make sure you calk your screws and most important take your time.

A saying the was drilled into me was "proper preparation prevents p**s poor performance" is always good advice.

It's not as hard as it seems but do it right you don't want any leaks

  3. Make sure you get the right type of glass - as I understand it there are 3 types - the last time I bought I got the wrong one, and ended up with glass that would not stick to my boat!
