  1. DVI is a video only connector.

HDMI is both video and audio.

HDTV? This is a regular LCD/Plasma/Rear Proj TV? If you connected the HDMI directly to your TV then any signal 5/6/7.1 would be down mixed to 2 Channel Stereo because you're TV is doing the audio processing and it's only got 2 speakers.

Connect your HDMi to your Surround Sound Processor or Surround Sound Receiver and then from the SSP/R to your HDTV. In this way your SSP/R will decode the audio properly and pass any video information to your TV.

  2. You will not get surround sound from a HDMI-to-DVI cable.  In fact, you'll lose all audio from this connection altogether since DVI is for video signals only.

You can use this cable to connect your HD-DVD player to your TV, but to get audio, you'll need to connect an audio cable to either your TV or your audio receiver.  This will either be a pair of red and white RCA cables, or a digital audio cable (either a special RCA cable or an optical audio cable.)

Note: your TV lacks the speakers required to do true surround sound.  TVs can do a simulated surround sound, but if you want true surround sound, you'll need a receiver that can process a digital surround sound signal for your 5 or 7 separate speakers and subwoofer.

  3. when you go hdmi to dvi, you lose sound. To get the 5.1 or 7.1 sound through dvi, you will have to get a digital optical cable and hook from your dvd player to your audio receiver. And you do need an audio receiver and satellite speakers for surround sound, your tv speakers won't cut it.
