  1. Two different ways for that:

    Do you have any sort of a network like a router or just the modem for your internet?

    If you have a router you could connect both your old pc and new pc to that and setup a home network to transfer the files (google home networking for more info)

    You could also use a crossover cat5 cable to achieve that.

    Also keep in mind just cause your old compaq is probably slower than your new pc you can always use that pc to store files and still access them threw other computers/devices in your network, Basically turn it into a grunt worker pc lol!

    Using a cd or dvd:

    You will need a cd/dvd burning program. There are many of them out there some free some not free, I'd recommend cdburnerxp it's free and works great http://cdburnerxp.se/

    If you have a dvd burner I would burn the files to a writeable dvd sense they hold more than a cd but a cd will also work but will just take more cds.
