So.. I don't really have any money to rent or have a professional come in to do my carpet. I'm reorganizing my house and upgrading some things and I found behind the couches a spot where one of my dads dogs likes to pee so the whole carpet smells aweful and it's gross to walk on it. I have a little drycleaner machine but it'd take forever to use that. I have alot of carpet cleaners and solution for the dry cleaning thing. So anyway sorry if it doesnt make sence, i'm a little tired, been moving funiture all night and just want a quick answer but whats the cheapest most unorthodox way to clean the carpet? I was thinking using some of the solution in a 5 gallon buck and making a mini swimming pool throughout the room and vacumming up the stuff in a container vac or even the little thing I have. (It works but it's better to just suck up the water because if you use it to spray the solution you have to go over the same spot 20 times).... So anyway, any help is appreciated.

  1. Spray the carpet with a mixture of vinegar and water.  You want it as wet as a steam cleaner would  get it...but don't pour it on.  You don't want to soak the padding underneath too much.  Let it sit awhile, and the suck up the water.  The vinegar will remove the smell and also disinfect the area.  When you've removed all the water with the machine, go back with some dry white towels and step on them to soak up even more.  Then place a fan where it's blowing on the spot to help the carpet dry faster.

  2. The one bad thing about dog urine is... that it smells. And if the dog urine wasn't cleaned up right away, it's probably leaked into the carpet padding, which will make it difficult to get the smell out. That's the one thing about carpet cleaning machines, is they sometimes wash down into the pad. I'm not sure where you're located, but here (Central CA), janitorial supply stores and grocery stores rent carpet cleaning machines for only $40 a day. If not, then you could try scrubbing it really well with a foaming carpet shampoo (you can buy "Pet Odor" shampoo from most Home Depot's or Lowe's.) These are usually about 1 liter and $5-10 bucks, they're meant for a machine - but that doesn't matter, it's all carpet cleaner. I'd mix a solution according to the directions and scrub away at the most offensive spots, then use a shop vac to suck up the water. You definitely don't want to pour water on too large of an area though.

  3.   Please don t try your method.. The trick of a good carpet cleaning is the rinse and getting alllllll the soap solution out.. Any soapy residue left in the carpet will attract dict and make it look bad in a short time..If it was your dads dogs get him to help pay a pro to do it .. It s a normal maintinance job that will help your carpet last longer.. The store rented machine don t have the suction power to get all the dirt ant residue  like a pro would so it s a good investment..Your dry clean machine may take longer but it s better than nothing,,  GL
