is it necessary to wear a helmet when you ski?

And what is the chance that you will actually fall and actually make use of the helmet when skiing?

Is it a big risk if you dont wear one while skiing?

  1. I COULD BE DEAD OR CRIPPLED IF I WASNT WEARING A HELMET

  2. I've been snowboarding for 12 years and I wear a helmet. I've taken a couple tumbles where I've felt my brain rattle in my skull so you're better safe than sorry. Gotta protect your noggin.

  3. Go to a skiing place once in awhile NEVER ever seen someone with a helmet, and i don't use 1, so i'd say no.

I've fell but if ur nervous don't go fast.

I dont think its a risk at all (snow is mostly soft)

  4. so far in CO there have been five deaths while skiers were wearing  helmets.

if you feel the need to wear one do it

if not you should spend the money on lessons

  5. I've been skiing/riding for a long time.  In the past there was no such thing as a helmet for skiing.  Once I had the shovel of a ski hit me in the head with a cut that required some attention.

I do a lot of teaching of children who are not always careful where they swing their skis.  My helmet protected me from those :)

When learning snowboarding, I found the helmet really prevented some head injuries.  Once while skiing I was hit by an uphill skier and broke some bones.  I remember bouncing my head on the slope but I'm sure the helmet helped.

But there is even a more practical advantage.  Helmets are very warm.  Even in windy cold temps you will find them a great asset.  And, in the snowy, rainy type of weather, they are great!  Ever ride a chairlift and have some water drip down from the cable or upper part of the chair?  Helmets are great for that!

On the downside, helmets can be too warm in the warmer parts of the season.  They tend to muffle the sounds around you and make it difficult to hear others talk to you.

For me, the helmet has prevented some injuries and made skiing/riding more enjoyable.  They won't help when meeting a tree at high speed but will help with some of the other 'minor' accidents.

I guess I like them and usually wear them!  I also feel more relaxed when going down the mountain.

  6. The risk is not so much if you fall, but what about being hit by some one else?  A helmet will not necessarily prevent a concussion, I know I was wearing one when a snowboarder hit me from behind 2 years ago and then left laughing about it.  He knocked me 4 ski lengths through the air and nearly killed me.  My companions, (all ex ski racers)  purchased helmets within a few hours because of the incident.

  7. In Colorado, all the locals wear helmets. They keep your ears warm and provide safety in the rare situation you actually hit your head. I would recommend one. My friend once fell and hit head on a rail. He was knocked unconscious for three minutes and the doctors at Summit said the helmet saved his life. (His parents don't let him slide rails anymore.) Also helmets have saved numerous lives when people hit have hit trees.

  8. I've been skiing for 23 years and started wearing a helmet everytime I go about 7 years ago.  I've had too many concussions from skiing.  I don't fall too often, I wear it because I don't trust the people around me.

  9. Well, personally I always wear a helmet when i ski. Im a competitive racer and have just gotten used to wearing a helmet. My helmet has probably saved my life on more than one occasion, as I get pretty aggressive on the slopes and end up bouncing my head off of many assorted objects. Wear a helmet if you go skiing.

  10. I would recommend wearing a helmet if you ski one or more times a week. It won't give you much protection against a tree, but it will help prevent injuries from skis, poles, chairlifts, the ground, and other people.

  11. im assuming if u hit a tree, or u fall on your ski or a rock or another hard object besides snow, it would help

  12. Well its smart

especially if you are a beginner

WEAR A HELMET AND YOU MAY GET DISCOUNTS

  13. I always wear a helmet.  It is more comfortable than a hat and holds my goggles in place.  before I got a helmet, I was always terrified that my hat and goggles would fly off, not to mention hats make me itchy.  If you are in a terrain park or racing, always wear a helmet.  also, while skiing, someone can crash into you from behind, catching you totally off guard.

  14. I would suggest it for sure...Why wouldn't you wear one.... I ALWAYS wear one, though i have not fallen once this season, my reason for wearing one is not because i expect myself to fall, but in the rare chance that it happens why not be protected?
