Helmut Marko says Fernando Alonso develops political skills after losing – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team advisor, Helmut Marko has said that Fernando Alonso of Ferrari has developed some political skills after losing the world championship title by 3 points in the 2012 Formula 1 season.
Alonso performed inspiringly well throughout the season and achieved results with admirable consistency even with an uncompetitive car. However, his main rival, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull performed better than him in the last few races with a faster car
and successfully won his third consecutive championship title after securing 6th place finish in the Brazilian GP.
After the season finale, a video clip ignited a dispute over Vettel’s overtake which was during the yellow flag as the warning lights were blinking in his cockpit. Therefore, the Scarlet team got a lot of emails from its fans who wanted to get the necessary
clarification regarding the matter.
Eventually, the Italian team requested the FIA to enlighten them over the issue. In response, the Federation declared it completely legal.
Meanwhile, Marko asserted that the Spaniard started playing politics because he lost the championship battle.
“He seems to have problems if he doesn’t win,” said Marko, speaking after the FIA rejected Ferrari’s challenge to Sebastian Vettel’s title over a disputed yellow flag pass at 2012 Brazil finale.
“When he (Alonso) doesn’t win, then he develops incredible political skills,” Marko added at a celebratory event in Graz, Austria.
On the other hand, the two-time world champion said that they only went to the FIA because their fans wanted the explanation regarding the issue, which has now been closed.
In addition, he said that he is really happy with his team’s overall achievement in this year and admired the efforts of all the members who worked really hard throughout the season.
Besides, he said that he is hoping to attain better results in the next season and doesn’t care about what German or other people think about him.
“Ever since I've been at Ferrari, I think I have grown a lot, especially this last year. Before, the people had a more or less good opinion of me, but now I notice a whole different level of respect. Next year? I hope to score three or four point more,”
Alonso said.
