Helmut Marko says Mark Webber will remain second driver at Red Bull in 2013 – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team advisor, Helmut Marko has said that Mark Webber will remain their second driver in the 2013 Formula 1 season.
Webber performed tremendously well during the start of 2012 and stood amongst one of the most consistent point scorers. However, he faced some technical issues due to which he failed to keep up his consistency and could only secure 6th place finish
in the drivers’ championship. Furthermore, he remained ahead of Felipe Massa of Ferrari and behind Jenson Button of McLaren.
On the other hand, his teammate, Sebastian Vettel performed incredibly well throughout the last season and successfully claimed his third consecutive title. Although, he had a very tough competition with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso who also performed impressively
well and fought until the very end of the season. Nevertheless, the veteran German driver seemed unbeatable during the last few races with the fastest car and won the title by just 3 points from the Spaniard.
Marko believes that after such a marvellous performance in the last four years, Vettel deserves preferential treatment over Webber in 2013.
“Mark knows what we expect of him,” Marko told Sport Bild. “For four years, Vettel and Webber have driven together in our team. Sebastian was runner-up once and champion three times. The statistic speaks for itself. There is no reason to think the balance
of power will change.”
Furthermore, the Australian driver also admitted that the triple world champion is ahead of him. However, he asserted that he is not going to play a supporting role in this season and will fight his own battle.
“Obviously with Sebastian's form, he's clearly on the front foot; not only from within our team but he's won three world titles on the bounce now so all the drivers have got to try and topple him,” Webber told Reuters.
“So, no, I'm not going there thinking in a supporting role at all,” he added.
The Aussie has been deemed as one of the most hardworking drivers in the sport. But, he has not been able to win even a single world championship until now. Let’s see how he performs alongside Vettel in this season.
