Helmut Marko wants Sebastian Vettel to stay at Red Bull beyond 2014 season – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing consultant Dr Helmut Marko is looking for an extension to Sebastian Vettel’s contract which is due to end in 2014.
The 2010 defending champion Sebastian Vettel has some confusion over his contract extension with Red Bull Racing. Vettel does not have a manager to speak for him, which seems to have created these contradicting assumptions of Vettel wanting to drive for
Ferrari or McLaren at some point in his career.
Recently, the 24-year-old was addressing the media, expressing his views on the thought of driving for Ferrari and McLaren Mercedes, and said that the idea to drive for them is not as appealing to him as one would imagine.
Yet his team owner Dietrich Mateschitz and advisor Marko have said that Vettel wants to drive for Ferrari some day.
Mateschitz said, “Seb (Sebastian) wants to drive for Ferrari some day. We will make it as difficult a decision for him as possible.”
“We all know the political sensitivities at Ferrari. And he (Vettel) has seen with us that he has a comfort factor. He needs a team that doesn't throw a knife in your back at the sign of trouble,” he added.
Marko also mentioned how much they wanted Vettel to remain with them.
He said, “Let's be clear: there is not going to be a ten-year contract, because we are not able to guarantee we will have a competitive car for that long. But in the medium term, the next three or four years, we are firmly planning to be with him.”
Vettel though has mentioned that he feels very comfortable with Red Bull and tagged them as family. Therefore, whether there is any truth to Vettel wanting to drive for Ferrari or not, one thing that seems to be certain is that the German is humming the
same tune as Dr Marko and is open to the idea of extending his contract beyond 2014.
