Question:

Help, I'm not sure where I stand with my recent car purchase. ?

I bought a used car and part exchanged my existing car a few days ago. The garage where I bought the car have just emailed me to say there is a problem with the car I part exchanged as they have ran a HPI check on it and it is showing a HPI check was done in May this year and the mileage on the report is showing at 87,000. Yet, my car had 65,000 on it and as far as I'm aware a HPI check was not ran on my car in May. Where do I stand with this, transfer of ownership on both cars in complete.

I'm in the UK ?

Thanks,

Michaela

  1. Thats their problem now, they did not do their homework. Enjoy your new car and do not worry.

  2. Don't think you`ve got anything to worry about, To put your mind at rest you could contact your local CAB (Citizens Advice Bureaus)

  3. they should have checked, they haven't- their problem. You sold them the car which had done 65,000 TO YOUR KNOWLEDGE. Just email them back, stating that you were not aware of this, and suggest politely that they HPI their cars BEFORE exchanging them! Silly garage! Don't worry Michaela, you're totally in the right.

  4. Not your problem!

They bought it off you, they have seen the car before they bought it and if you never lied to them about anything, its not your fault. They should have done that check before they bought it. You have not wilfully mispresented the car, it is their expertise - not yours.

They should do the HPI check on every car being presented to them, not just for the milage, but also if the car is stolen, if there is outstanding finance on it, if its written off by a car insurer etc.

By the way, if you look at the milage, 87.000 3 months ago and 65.000 now can make sense...

Would it be possible that the 65.000 you recall was actually miles and the 87.000 the test shows is kilometers?

That would mean that your car had 87.000 km three months ago and 104.000 km (=65.000 miles) now

Would be 17.000km (=10.500 miles) in three months, could be right?

  5. Ignore them, the deal is done. 'Caveat emptor' let the buyer beware !

  6. i hope this puts your mind at rest the hpi the garage done on your car should have been done before the part ex so they have no come back at all.as for the hpi being done in may why would you want to hpi your own car.just tell them the deal is done and if they want to take it further then go ahead.if it went to court they would not have a leg to stand on
