Question:

Help, I feel like the Mirena IUD has permanently damaged me. Is there supposed to be this much cramping? ?

I just had the Mirena IUD birth control put in yesterday morning. I was numbed and it still hurt worse than anything I've ever felt. I had to call the doctor to get some Vicodin because it hurt so bad. And that barely eased the pain. I am hurting so much I am in tears and it has been two days now. I feel like something is really wrong I had to call off work. Is this normal? Has anybody else felt like this? Please give me some advice.

  1. honey,

First of all, there are a few kinds of IUD. you have some which contain copper(small amounts) and you have some which carry the high dose of horemone. both of which next to and touching your cervix will cause cramping, especially the one which contains copper.

Have yourself checked out, and your MD should've explained all side affects and what to expect, and told you what to do/look out for if you are having these symptoms.

That is so wrong, see if you can get some help asap, at least to be sure eveything is okay.

  2. I went on their website for you.. this is what it says

    Q. Will it hurt?

    A. Some women may experience some discomfort while Mirena® is being placed. Uterine cramps, which feel like menstrual cramps, and dizziness may also occur, but typically disappear within a day or two. Notify your healthcare professional if pain and other symptoms persist.

I think the fact that you are having this much pain after 2 days is a sign that something is not right. Call your doctor tomorrow and see what they think you should do. I know its inconvenient, but could you just do the pill or the depo shot every 3 months?

My sisters friend had one put in and she said it was a little uncomfortable for a couple hours and she was fine.. so this really isn't normal. Talk to your doctor ASAP.

  3. It sounds like you may have a pelvic inflammatory disease, it usually starts within a few hours after placement. When you called the doctor did they have u go in and check you? Because that is not right. The first day cramping is normal and can be extreme but it shouldn't feel like that anymore. U need to go to the doctor soon, if tonight is not a possability then go 2marrow for sure. good luck

  4. sheesh.  if its hurting you bad enough to where prescription pain killers dont help, something must be wrong.  call your doc.

  5. Something similar happened to me.  Go to a different doc or to the ER immediately!  No, it should not be hurting that much.  It may not have been put in correctly. How many such procedures has your doctor performed ~ did you ask?  It's NOT just point-and-click procedure, the doctor needs to know what he/she is doing and be able to do it well.  Go NOW!  Get it CHECKED!  Good luck!
