I got a jury summons and I don't have a car or a job. I called to tell them that and they told me that I was to late. So, I sent the judge a fax to try and explain but, He denied it and said that I have to show up. What do I to? What if I'm picked? How do I prove to them that I'm not Lieing? Oh and on the survey thing I put down that I didn't have transportation. This is my first time being called I'm only 21. Please Help me.

  1. Jury service is both a privilege and an obligation of citizenship. While jury service can be inconvenient, your service is a necessary and valuable part of the legal system of this country. There are penalties for not reporting for jury service ranging from fines of up to $500.00, to a jail sentence or both.

How did you get the judges fax line?? I've go to chambers all the time but can only get to the clerks;never to the judge!!

not trying to be harsh, sorry!! what state do you live in? The penalties can't be too bad.

  2. Cities don't have courts;counties have courts. No one can help you until you state your county if you want to know what kind of penalty you face by avoiding jury duty. If that's what you are asking.

  3. Just show up by bus.  It's too late to do anything about it.

If you get picked, you get paid a fee for it.  They also pay for transportation.

  4. Calm down.  They won't do anything to you.  They may send you a letter, but the fact that you have made it clear that you have no way of getting there will stop them from doing anything to you.

After doing my civic duty year after year, one year I literally forgot to respond.  Since then they haven't sent me any further letters.

Although the law says you  have to attend, it is an unenforceable one.  Really.

  5. You will have to appear. There are no appeals at this time. If you are chosen, the judge may arrange for a sheriff deputy to pick you up or may arrange for living space (hotel/motel) near the court house. If you do not appear, the judge will issue a "bench warrant" for your arrest. The sheriff will come after you and you could go to jail or have to be bailed out. You will have to figure out a way, even if it's to walk to town. In the long run, that will be less trouble and expense than simply not showing up.

  6. Just postpone it.

  7. THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY FOR YOU TO GET THERE? NO ONE CAN GIVE YOU A RIDE? HERES ON FOR YOU CALL AN AA HOT LINE AND TELL SOMEONE YOU HAVE JURY DUTY NEED TO GET A RIDE THEN GO ATTEND AN AA MEETING LATER THAT NIGHT AND THATS HOW YOU CAN GET YOUR TRANSPORTATION. LAUGH ITS PROBABLY GOING TO WORK AND YOU MAY NEED TO GOTO AA ANYWAY IT DOESN'T HURT ANYONE.
