Help, always getting hit in the nose while boxing...tips?

Every friday we have sparring in boxing. I always get hit, actually its always the first hit, right to the nose and i start bleeding and it always ruins my sparring. What are some good tips or anything that can help me out, i am new to boxing...i have been doing wrestling for a couple of years...and am now starting mma, but we take boxing,mui tai, and soon our grappling/mma room will open...any hints,suggestions???

  1. I know it's been said B4, but U need it:  "Keep your hands up!"  It would also help to tuck your head against your leading shoulder.

    Where is your coach when this happens?  Why isn't he telling you this?  Are you in a proper boxing gym, or is it just a club run by a couple guys who think, "Kids like to fight and know how to do it, so let's just put them in the ring and see how they do." - and of course take your money for it.


  2. It's boxing and you are going to get hit. If you are getting hit more than usual you need to spend a bit more one on one time with your trainer doing gaurd and return drills on the focus mitts, shadow boxing will always help as well. Make sure you are throwing your punches straight off your cheek rather than dropping them just before, and make sure they come back to the spot you threw them from. A good trainer will sort this.

    Lastly, and this is a drill I used, put a tennis ball under your chin while you are shadow boxing, it will teach you to keep your chin down.

    Good luck, hands up, chin down and always be first!!

  3. learn to slip punches, right hand slip left follow with left hook to body striaght right to face, and visea versa, keep you hands up at all times, keep eyes on opponite.

There are a few things that you will need to practice and get better at in order to protect your face.  First of all, you need to improve your head movement.  If your head is always moving it is harder to hit.  Also, you need to practice slipping and parrying punches.  Slipping is moving your head and/or torso out of the way of a punch. (It is best to slip toward the side the punch is coming from.)  Parrying means using your gloves to deflect punches.  

    Speak to your trainer about how you wish to improve in this area.  While some old school boxing trainers are strict and will stubbornly refuse to alter their idea of proper curriculum, most trainers like to help their fighters improve.  If you don't have one of these trainers, look into seeking one out.

  8. Stand in front of a full length mirror and study your stance. Improve your guard. By looking at yourself, you can see how open you are. If you are set to spar now, lower your head and keep one hand UP as a guard !!!! You could put both gloves to your forehead and look out from between your forearms.

  9. If you are getting a lot of bloody noses you can go to the doctor and there is a simply procedure you can get to help with nose bleeds. I don't remember what it is called but if you speak to a doctor they will know what you are referring to.

    Also it would be important for you to learn the v-slip and the u-slip. ask your trainer to show you how to do them and always keep your hands up especially when you slip a punch
