My Hemmingway cat (I believe it is a male) adopted me over 4 years ago. He stayed out side until just recently then I decided to bring him inside. He has no problem. wetting in the litter box (always put in the same place) but, does not p**p in it. He chooses the floor ! What could cause him to do this ? I do not want to put him back outside due to this problem. I want to correct it. Also, I brought him up stairs to my bedroom, he has yet to go down stairs ! Does anyone know why he is having this behavior problem ?

  1. Sometimes they are used to dirt. Try adding dirt to your litter til he gets the idea, then cut back on the amount of dirt slowly til you get rid of it.  They also like privacy when the use the litter box. Make sure it is in a quiet place.

  2. What you should do is everytime he wakes up from a nap, pick him up and put him right in the litterbox until he goes. If he gets out just put him back in. It may take a while but eventually he will realize that that is where you want him to p**p.

  3. he has been an outside cat, it will take him a while to adjust. i would not push him into going downstairs because of the litter box issue.

confine his area to small space such as one room.

put the poo off the floor into the box and treat the area he has went in with a strong odor remover because he will go back to this spot and if there are other spots that you may not know of from previous animals he will go in those too.

try to watch him and desposit him in the box as he is going somewhere else and praise him bunches for correct behavior.

this is a big adjustment for him.

  4. Cats like to dig in dirt before they deposit.  Since he's use to dirt, cat litter is not dirt.  Just give him time he'll start using it.  If you feed your cat downstairs he'll go down to eat.

  5. if he has adopted you and is a stray you need to be careful. try seeing a vet to make sure it has no problems and ask about behavioural problems.

whenever you catch it going to poo then pick it up and take it to the litter box. it may be a learned behaviour before you adopted it and this can be changed.

as it is upstairs you may want to coax it down the stairs gently by putting it at the top and whistling for it. try patting it or scraching its cheek and it should follow.

then try going back up the stairs.

if it is older than 4 it should be able to go outside and know where to come back (all cats do) and it can poo outside.
