Live in Las Vegas and it's hot, hot, hot! My poor plants keep dying. Can anyone tell me which plants will do well in a desert environment?

  1. Cacti or succulants would be good.  You could make a very interesting potted display with some cacti on a patio.  Below is a link to a very cool display that makes succulants look like a coral reef.

  2. Cactus and succulents. Not much else!

  3. Succulents do well. They are cacti and cactus-type plants. Aloe vera, century plants, yucca, and various cacti. Buy or make some nice planters to border your patio with the plants. Water them when the newpaper or TV weather report says it is raining in El Paso.

You can always get artificial plants or trees. They won't die you!

Some patio furniture and an umbrella might make it more pleasant out there. We even take a fan out to create a breeze in the evening and enjoy a nice cool drink.

  4. Drought resistance golden carpet. It is one of the sedem breeds.  But it is a ground cover. I had some in my yard sale. It grew over the pot just like a hanging plant.

Also Live Long is another sedem plant. The flowers look like pink broccoli. Scroll down the page for Photo on the following link.

I have both. The live long gets tall. And it spreads. I have mine in a tall farmer type baskets (like the ones farmers use to gather crop) that has been painted. I had to line it with plastic, then ad a drain hole. Rise it up off the ground a little to drain. Ad empty plastic bottles to help with drainage. Then soil. plant then more soil. The thin basket last for a couple years in all kinds of weather. Then it is time to get a new one. It grows tall and kind of sways down, only to go reaching for the sun again. I have to thin it out each year, so the yard sale gets some. You can improve the condition of your soil by mixing some peat moss and the moisture control miracle grow soil with the soil you normally use.

Both of these sedem plants are very hardy also, and survive temps in the below zero. I live in zone 5 A.

You can put home made bird houses with the fake mushroom birds glued on them etc... to help your decor.

  5. There are flowering plants that tolerate major heat if you can water them regularly.   Bougianvilla, lantana, Hibiscus.   As said, if water isn't available, try succulents.   Plants need care, especially when in a pot.   It is like keeping a puppy in a coop.  It can only get what you give it.   Even so, a small plant in a large pot can stay too wet and rot.

  6. Hey fellow Vegan! I have a great patio/container garden. I have small palms, a mini lime tree, cacti and mini roses. I keep them all out of the direct sunlight and when it's this hot I water three times a week. I use ceramic pots in various colors, textures, and sizes. I also have small battery operated lights in different colors that I throw in them when I have people over! Succulents don't work here, all mine fried! Good luck and happy gardening!
