Question:

Help, please! My 2 year old got a rash on his inner thighs after being in a pool.

Before he went in the pool, he was fine. He wore swim diapers and swim trunks. He was moving his legs a lot and in the pool about an hour. Upon taking his bottoms off, his inner thighs were red and puffy. At first, thought bug bite or sting. We put anti-bacterial ointment on them. A day later, puffiness down, but red and splotchy. He does not have fever, his mood is fine except when I put more ointment on.

Anyone ever had experience like this? He wears underwear most of the time - we are potty training. Is it irritation rash or something more concerning? Medical remedies? Thanks for any ideas. I will go to doctor if need be.

  1. The swimming pool rash may refer to the skin being exposed to excessive amounts of chlorine, which is a skin irritant. If the strength of the chlorine in the water is too strong or if repetitive exposure to chlorinated water occurs, a chlorine rash or chlorine itch may develop.

The best treatment or remedy is to stay away from chlorinated water for a while to let the skin recover from the chlorine exposure. The skin rash will generally disappear without treatment after 7 to 10 days. Read more here http://www.healthy-skincare.com/swimming...

  2. it could be irritation from rubbing against the diaper while in the pool. If he was moving his legs a lot, it would have rubbed, giving him the rash. Keep it clean, allow air, and put more ointment on it. He will be fine. If it doesn't clear up in a few days, see a doctor. It could be an allergic reaction.

    Good luck!!!

  3. It could just be a heat rash... Maybe from his legs touching in the chlorine water too much. Maybe your pool's chlorine level is too high?

  4. could be allergic to the chlorine in the water or super sensitive. watch rash carefully. If the pool was a public pool, i would take him to see his family Dr. In the news around my area some kind of skin disease is in the water.
