Question:

Help, please... What should I do concerning pain meds and breast feeding?

I had a c-section last week and the Dr. has strictly limited my use of pain medication because I am breast feeding and it gets in my milk. He said if I use a lot of meds I am going to have to discontinue breast feeding. I want to breast feed. I know it is best for the baby, but I am very sore, unbearable, almost, at times, and I have two other very small children to care for as well, and it is hard to do so in pain. What should I do?

  1. Hi,

I had 2 c-section and for me it really hurt for about 3 days each. OK, it was not too great after that either but not to the point that I couldn't take it. You think everything is OK? I took Tylenol for a little longer (strictly what was allowed).

But your doctor is absolutely right. Your baby gets everything, so be careful whatever you eat or drink.

Could somebody help you with your 2 little one? Or how about if you take medication but pump your milk and dump it for a couple more days until you feel a bit better? This way you would keep up your milk supply and you could go back onto breastfeeding. My baby was a preemie and couldn;t nurse for a long time but she learned it. So don;t worry about that she will "forget" how to nurse.
