Question:

Help, tooth infection?! :(?

I just came home from the dentists a few hours ago, I had an extraction on one of my upper teeth as my mouth was was over crowded. Since then I have this disgusting taste in my mouth, as well as really bad breath (lucky I'm not going anywhere tonight!) also I am salivating like a dog! is this normal? On top of this I have a splitting headache, would this be part of a tooth infection? It's very rare I get headaches or anything like that.

I went for another extraction a week ago (again due to overcrowding of my upper jaw) and when I got home I was not salivating half as much and didn't have any taste in my mouth at all. I'm really worried it might be the start of an infection. Someone please help! Thankyou x

  1. Go now! immediately go to hospital emergency and see an emergency dentist, you'll need anti-biotics for that, don't hang around, it sounds real bad, go to A & E now.

  2. Infection would not set in that quickly if you're talking about the space where you had the tooth extracted. And I would imagine if you had a different tooth which was infected, the dentist would have mentioned it while you were there and wouldn't just have ignored it.

The taste is probably from old blood, as is the smell. The saliva is the mouth's natural response to keep the area clean, and the headache is because a few hours ago you had a tooth ripped out of your head.

You do NOT need to go to hospital, this is definitely NOT an emergency. Rinse your mouth gently with warm salty water to keep the area clean, and expect it to taste and smell pretty bad for a couple of days.
