Is it true that the record (music) companies were going to hire private investigators to check people's hardrives on their computers to see if they have any music that was downloaded for free. They also, said that if there was free music, they were going to prosecute the people with free music downloads. Is this true????

This is a scare tactic used to intimidate the suspects! How are they going to examine your hard drive unless you give them permission? Just never admit to copying anything and they can't do anything about it unless you make an admission or give them permission to examine your possessions! Even if they were find some evidence of something on your PC they cannot prove who actually did the copying!
