  1. A great starting location in Los Angeles is West Los Angeles.

Go to Yahoo! Maps and zoom in on West L.A.  Go to the squared section which is bordered by Sepulveda Blvd. on the east, National Blvd. on the south, Bundy Dr. on the west and Wilshire Blvd. on the north.

That's a pretty large area which contains scores of apartments, townhomes and condos.  The apartments, while not exactly cheap, are not in the stratosphere either.  They are definitely affordable.

Furthermore, this area of L.A. is dynamic in that there are many things close by...shopping, education, beach, police dept., courthouse, great dining, small airport, etc.

And there is virtually zero gang or violent crime activity in this area.

  2. First, get a job, then look for a place to live nearby. Just remember that cheap rent in LA means no one wants to live in that area because of gang activity.

There are few places renting for less than $1000 a month and still are in neighborhoods that do not have gang troubles.

The cheapest place to live in California is in a town called Trona, about a six hour commute to LA. Each way.

  3. Gas is getting/or is expensive.  If you can't find a good place in the city.  Try finding a location near a Metro Commute station or find out if your future employer has a car/van pool program.

  4. Live in west LA (Inglewood/Beverly Hills) probably the safest.

South and East LA is very dangerous at night, but fine in the daytime.
