I work in a very number driven department in the banking industry and they are offering a $20,000 bonus at the end of this year for the person with the highest numbers. I am one out of 4 other top people in a department of 2500 people that have high enough number/stats that qualify to try for this huge bonus. My boss has always been good about giving me my compitition's numbers/stats so I can see where I stand in comparison...For what ever reason this last month in a half she has been ignoring my requests for my competition's numbers/stats. She has told me lies to my face and even ignored and dismissed verbal and written (e-mail) requests for information. I have been so worried after months of hard work and huge amounts of over-time to try and win this competition for the $20,000 that it will all be in vain because my boss has shut off to me and all my requests just for simple numbers/stats that have never been a problem to ask for in the past. I asked another manager last week when my boss was not there for the day for the numbers/stats I needed and she gave me a good portion of information with a smile that same day. I was so upset because now I knew that this information I needed has and was available to me and for what ever reason my manager has been denying me for over a month. I went to the Director of my department today and spoke with him and he basically listened to me but I feel no resolve at all...He is basically just going to talk to her. What is your opinion on this matter? What should I do? I almost feel like quitting I am so upset and mad that for a month this has been making me feel awful and for what? Please, help.

  1. write an email to the director as a follow up to what you talked about and CC your boss

  2. you made tired by reading all of that now i cant reply with an answer lolz......

  3. Are the other three people in the running friends with the boss. Is it possible that MAYBE one of them has the contest in the bag and will split the prize with the boss? Or maybe you have been asking to much and it is getting on the bosses nerves.

  4. Sounds like you have quite a head on your shoulders...Other banks would be lucky to have you. I say win the bonus money...Then quit this awful bank that has awful management. Good luck!

Forget about the fact and stop worrying that your boss failed, denied, hid, withheld, whatever.. the information of stats from you.(for whatever her insane reasons)

You don't say if your numbers were still up there in the running, I might have been able to tell you your boss' motives with that info. Or for that matter, were you using the stats for inspiration or motivation for yourself?  I know whenever I use to look at my number vs the others, I would get very exicited and go sell more. It can be a great tool.

    However...

Being the resourceful and good salesman that you are, you didn't let obstacles stop you from getting what you needed.

    You did an ''End Run''

You got the info from another source, I would have stayed with that source for future stats, until the ''well ran dry''

Always go with the path of least resistant.  You'll make less enemies along the way

You didn't ask this part, but it is very important for your future...

NEVER, NEVER go over your boss' head without sitting her down firstand have an open discussion regarding situation. ( no whining, no accusations, no anger, just the facts with a smile. Always nice first.)

    After that...

If it can not be resolved (and it is Hugely important) then you suggest that the both of you take it up with ''so and so''(your boss', boss), then go do that.  But you have given them fair warning.    Once you go over their head, you must be prepared for repercussions, ( Right or wrong, Bosses can get pissie about that and take it out on you.)

As you rise thru the Ranks remember, keep your nose clean, your eyes and ears open and be smart!

Try not to make enemies( they will hurt you if they can),.. you can still go with the ''take no prisoners'' attitude, but don't broadcast or advertise it.

I was very assertive and ambitious when I was younger, ( I made a LOT of $$$ andsome mistakes ) but one of the most valuable lesson I learned and still use to this day is,

''You don't always get to win by being right '' (choose your battles).

If you are close to the numbers to quit, just keep your head down and continue to work your tail off

    GOOD LUCK!!!!
