i illegally downloaded something and got caught by the game maker.

my local internet provider called my home and said that they were called by the game manufacturer and said that they needed to turn off my internet immediately. the guy said that they havened received a sepena yet, but it is still a possibility. even though i was only caught with one, they still might do it they said. they turned my internet back on today but the internet provider said that if they will be watching my online activity at all times and if i happened again they will turn off my internet forever, and they will fine me, and so will whoever i took it from.

do you think that i will get a sepena? be honest too. thank ya.

  1. Too many holes in the story for me to find it believable.  The answer is no, I seriously doubt that you'll get a subpoena.  But then I seriously doubt the veracity of the rest of the story, too.

  2. Neither your ISP or your game maker can fine you.  Then can take you to you court, where the judge could fine you.  They can also sue you.  The RIAA was winning multi-thousand dollar judgments for p****y of music.  Then there is possible jail time.

A subpoena (not sepena) is possible, but not likely, if this is your only offense.  At this point they are trying to scare you out of future downloading.  Downloading copyrighted material is a crime, it's theft.

For anybody reading this - if you are pirating music, games, movies, software, etc. Now would be a good time to stop.   If you do it over the Internet there is a good chance you will get caught. The content owners are putting in place a lot of tools to find out who is downloading.

The big ISPs are putting software in place so that they can rapidly identify who is doing the downloading.  These ISPs expect to process hundreds of thousands of subpoenas every month.   In most cases they will dish out a few warnings before legal action is taken.

  3. Have you even been charged with a crime?

I think they are just threatening you into behaving, personally.

  4. .  This is all a big bluff to "scare you straight".  You will not get a subpoena. You do need to stop breaking the law if you don't know how to avoid getting caught.
