  1. Igneous rocks come from volcanoes and are either felsic or mafic. Rhyolite is a felsic intrusive/extrusive usually loosely consolidated whereas basalt it a mafic extrusive and is generally very dense. Granite is an intrusive felsic rock as well. Metamorphosed rocks are generally found in very old land masses where tremendous pressure has recrystallized the original rocks. The exception to this are porphyry metamorphic rocks that have been altered by the heat of local volcanic activity.

    Sedimentary rocks are just mud or sand that were layed down by erosion.
