My guinea pig was just bought yesterday (aug. 30th) and he doesn't let anyone touch him. he scampers around like crazy trying to avoid us. we can't pick him up...he only eats and poops im not sure that he sleeps. I really don't know what to do with him. What's the point of having the piggy if i cant even hold him? i tried talking and feeding him but it doesn't work. when we got him at the pet store he was really friendly and i picked him up and he liked me and my sister. when we came home it was different. i held him once when nobody was around but then he started to spaz out and i had to put him down. then after that i never got to hold him again. i think i should give him away.....WHAT DO I DO

  1. don`t give him away his just getting used to hie new environment

i think you might be rushing into something give him a day or two to

settle down without touching him or being near his cage then he should be a little better.

    hope these helped.

  2. Well remember, you just took him out of its home.  Your guinea pig is probably a little afraid now because he is not used to the new surroundings.

How would you like it being forced out of your home and put somewhere else not knowing what is going to happen next?  Well that's how he feels.

So I would say give it another day and leave him alone so he gets used to his new home and makes it his home.  He is probably afraid something bad will happen now.

Then after a day or so, put your finger in there and try and let him smell it to get used to your scent.  When you try and get him, he feels like you might hurt him.  And you know, for 2 weeks, gradually work your way to get him to like you.  Letting him sniff you, feeding him from your hands, and petting him.  Just don't try and pick him up too quick.  Maybe try cupping your hands and letting him walk onto your hands may work.

Remember, it takes time to form a bond between you two.  Don't rush into it.  It's like a friendship, you sometimes don't make friends right away.  It takes time to become someone's friend because you get to know each other better.

    Good Luck!

  3. Hey sorry about your guinea pig!  I don't know if things have gotten any better, but he/she is probably just scared and confused in his/her new environment.  Give him/her some time to adjust and don't try so hard hopefully he/she will open up to you.  Good luck!

  4. Don't worry, just be patient.

Your piggy has been around his friends for the past 2months and has had the pet store as his home, so let him settle into his new environment for a little longer so he feels comfortable and un-threatened

Tomorrow put a little food or a treat on your hand and place your hand flat in the cage, after a while he should feel safe and be nosy enough to come over and see what going on. When he comes over talk to him and try petting him gently. Then the next day try picking him up, use both hands and then place him in your arms and again pet him gently. Your new piggy will soon get used to this and will come willingly to see you.

So just take things slowly to limit the stress to your piggy (piggy's can get stressed very easily)

  5. is he in a cage if so try putting a fleece blanket over the cage.

+ then hold him with the blanket + he will get used to his scent also try putting an old top of yours like in with his/her bedding + he will get used to your scent + it should make holding your Piggy alot easier :)

    Good Luck :)

  6. You only got him one day ago. Give him a chance. He's getting used to his surroundings.

What are you feeding him? He could be not feeling well because of bad food. You should be feeding hay, plain pellets, and a variety of fruits and veggies everyday. Here's a veggie list: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/diet...

The best hay and pellets around come from http://www.oxbowhay.com/ or http://www.kmshayloft.com/

You should build or buy him a C&C cage, because if you think about it, the more space he has to run, the less scared he will be. Because in their minds, if something scary comes at them, they have places to run. http://www.guineapigcages.com/

Talk to him constantly. "Hello piggie, how are you today?" "What are you doing, silly piggie?" "Want your veggies,  *name*?" Et cetra.

When you hold him, hold him in a towel so he'll feel more secure. You could also get him a cozy sak to hold him in. http://www.cozycavy.com/

  7. DONT give up it takes time, NO LOUD NOISES!!! and stay calm!!! Keep petting him daily and be calm and he will come around.. here is some info I wanted to share if you want to read it.. GOOD LUCK

Piggies love fruit and veggies!! Broccoli makes their pee stink so limit that veggie to once a week, make sure its all raw.. They love timothy hay and grass!!! THEY also have to eat guinea pig pellets made just for them, they can’t keep vitamin C in their bodies so they SHOULD NOT eat rabbit food, it looks the same so be careful when purchasing it!! If you have to in a pinch give him rabbit food give him a orange wedge daily with it.. Guinea pigs food has added vitamins in it just for them. I made the mistake of giving my guinea pigs some of those guinea pig sticks made from seeds don’t do that it got all stuck in my guinea pigs neck and cause a lot of problems inside, not pretty.. NOW TO KEEP THE CAGE ODER FREE!!! I use about 20 sheets of news paper at the bottom of the cage topped with this GREAT ORDER eliminator cage litter, called CRITTER COUNTRY, this is the BEST stuff for the piggies, so don't forget the news paper lined up at the bottom it will help absorber the urine and the critter country will help with the smell its great combo. If your piggies misses the shavings, put some in a corner for him to sleep on, but you will be so HAPPY with the new litter there will be no smell.. it lasts for over a week if done right I also keep my empty tissues boxes for them to hid in they love it, also any toilet paper used rolls they love to have fun with. If you get a problem with ants getting to their fruit just use a fine line of Vaseline around the legs of the cage or base of the cage to keep the ants from crossing, and always, always keep them with plenty of water!!! THEY ARE THE BEST PETS I sure miss my babies. Anyway GOOD LUCK!! MORE INFO FOR YOU! http://www.mgpr.org/MGPR/Guinea%20Pig%20...

  8. Don't worry it makes complete sence that hes scared. I mean he thought the petstore was his "home". He had all of his friends there and everything. Just give you guinea pig a few treats and a few days to adjust. By then he will realize that your home is his new home.

  9. 1) I had a hamster like that. He was plain mean. Eventually he died because my sister tried to pick him up and he ran right out of her hand into the floor and ran away and we found him dead under a table the next day. (So I just went to the store and got another, and that one is nice! I still have that hamster today!)

2)You just bought him. He isn't used to you. He doesn't know you. He doesn't recognize the new 'habitat'. It may take weeks before he will let you pick him up. Just be patient and gentle and loving.

    3) Guinea generally run like that and go a little crazy. Thats the way they are. Try hamsters! They are nice too. Or rabbits! They can be fun! (I have had 2.)

    4) Oh and if he still feels lonely and scared, maybe get a friend at the same place you got him. So he can have a buddy. If I was surrounded by...lets say bears, I would want a human friend to be with me.

  10. He's just getting used to a new home.

Another guinea pig companion will make him braver and so will picking him up, cuddling him and spending as much time as you can with him every day.

    Good Luck.
