Question:

Help! 5 Year Old boy Bday Party Ideas?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

My son is turning 5 in three weeks, I really need some cost-effective ideas! He loves Spiderman and any other superhero related stuff.

In the past, there have always been more adults than children at his bdays, however the past two years I managed to keep the focus on the children.

The problem is I have too many friends! They're all expecting a big party, and this year I simply cannot afford it!

Please don't judge me, but I do need to keep up with appearances...any young single mom out there will agree with me I'm sure. :P

Thank You for your Help Yahoo Answers! My budget is around $300 if even that much :( Expecting around 12 kids and many more adults...

  2. You don't need to spend a lot of money on a birthday party to make it a good party.

You can also ask the adults of the other children to bring along a plate of food (to help reduce costs)... ask them to bring some nibblies.

There are lots of activities that can be done....that are quite cheap....and you can set up the backyard (or inside to do them in)

Make a games board with medals and organise the kids in activities.  Like an "olympic superhero theme".  Do a mixture of different races and other activities.  You can make it spiderman or just "superhero" themed if you want to...and change the names of the games slightly to suit superheroes.

Instead of giving everyone treats of candy, make up lots of round paper "medals" out of cardboard. Attach some string so they can wear their medals.  Make a large "medal board" with a list of games you are going to play with them.

After each game have the group gather around the board whille you write the winners name down. the do the next game.

This will keep the boys attentive and interested.

at the end of the party, hand out the medals - the pride will be over whelming and they will all remember your party for the rest of their lives. :)

List of games - u can use in the olympic theme or superhero not:

musical chairs  -  supermans flying chairs

Egg on the spoon  -  spidereggs on the spoon

water balloon fight  -  Dr Octavias water fight

running race  -  Who is the flash?

    3 leg race

    hopping race

toss the water ballon (pair up and throw back and forth one step back every catch)

    bug hunt

    musical freeze game

    musical bumps game

    - play music, when the music stops the children have to do a particular thing. e.g. "next time the music stops you have to cluck like a chicken".

    sleeping tigers game

    - all children lay on the ground and pretend to be asleep. if anyone moves, they are out. (this game will calm a group of hyper 5 year olds with no effort at all).

    hide and seek

    doggie doggie wheres your bone

pin the tail on the donkey

    sack race

tying a balloon to ankle, step on each other's, last one left wins

    relay races

    long distance ball throwing

    duck duck goose

red light, green light       (Green Lantern lights!!)

    - the person who is "up" stands a few meters away from everyone else. they face away from the group. when the person who is "up" says "green light" the children walk toward him. when he says "red light" the children freeze. he looks at them, and if anyone moves they are out.

the first person to touch the one who is "up" is up next.

    Mr Squiggle.

    - draw a picture on a piece of paper one little bit at a time. the first one to guess what the picture is, wins. (this is a game that can last for ages and the children are calm and attentive)

    Thumb wars

    Arm Wrestling

Forward roll competition (who can roll the longest)

    Long Jump

    Pass the Parcel

other things you could do so you don't have to be "hosting games" all day are a good thing to do if they seem to be getting bored or getting rowdy:

    make a city

    - using old cardboard boxes (e.g. toothpaste boxes, tissue boxes, cereal boxes etc), paper, crayons and masking tape the boys can make a massive pretend city outside. introduce cars and toys and they will be entertained for the entire afternoon.

Another thing that works great is hiding little trinkets around the house and having the kids go on a treasure hunt.

Another good wind down time.....is to put a DVD movie on for all the kids to watch...so they can settle down a bit.

I just found this on a site:

    Host an 'Action Hero Olympics'.

Prepare a series of challenging feats, varying the games so that everyone has a chance to win. Include long jumping, fast running, long-distance ball throwing, balance-beam walking, obstacle course challenges and relay races. Be sure to have plenty of adults on hand to supervise.

Play 'Super Hearing'. Have the guests identify mysterious tape-recorded sounds.

Play 'Super Tasting'. Blindfold the children and have them taste and guess foods.

Play 'Super Smelling'. Blindfold the kids and have them sniff a variety of aromas and name the sources.

Play 'Super Vision'. Have the kids look at enlarged or reduced pictures and everyday items and guess what they are.

  3. Try looking into an arcade in your area to see if they offer birthday parties, and if not, try a local park and rent the inflatables...always a hit, and a bar-b-que always works with the adults!!

  4. By this age, many, many families start doing the parties just for the child.  $300 is a lot to spend on a party.  It's too bad that your friends expect a party...they really shouldn't, it's not their birthday.  I would have a party with just the children.  You don't mention if this would be outside or inside though.

If outside...do a field day party with all sorts of relay races.  Make it for after lunch and just serve snacks and juice.

  5. Go ahead and get the cake and invitations in Spider man.  Save a lot of money though and get color coordinating plates and napkins at your local dollar store.  You can always bake you cake yourself or just get a regular birthday cake pre made and add some new spidey toys for your son to actually play with after the party.  They charge a lot for the cake kits and the toys are never really that much fun.  You can get some Mylar balloons with Spidey on them and then buy one of the helium tanks at the party store and it will fill about 20-30 latex balloons.  Then you can have lots of Balloons again in the color coordinating theme.  If you want to do treat bags then just get some Ziploc bags and fill with a variety of candy and maybe some cheap little favors which can again be found at your local dollar store.  You don't need to worry about serving a meal when a simple cake ice cream and punch will suffice.  Make up a couple pitchers of koolaid and away  you go.

I too am a single mom and I know how it goes.  You don't need to spend a bunch of money on the party for your kid to have a good time.  Your friends should not expect it and if they are your friends then they should understand that being a single income parent really pinches a budget.  In the end it doesn't matter what anyone thinks or expects as long as your son has a good Birthday.

  6. 1 baseball

6 or you could have it at play center or the park
